2022 DNCA Calendar

All events will be held in compliance with CDC guidelines for COVID-19.  Please bring a mask and practice social distancing if required or recommended pursuant to these guidelines.

Until September: Submit your photos for the John Goodwin Nature Photo Contest in our basket at the Demarest Public Library between Aug. 1st and Sept. 16th. All photos must be taken in the nature center. Winners will be announced at Oktoberfest (or by phone/email if Oktoberfest is cancelled).

January and February: Ice skating parties as conditions permit. To be on our email notification list, write to [email protected].

Saturday, March 26th:  Nature Walk and Volunteer Day.  At 11am, a naturalist will lead an educational hike. At about noon we will collect litter. Bring gloves. Meet at the parking lot by the Imaginative Playground.  Rain date: Saturday, April 2nd.

Saturday, April 23rd: Birdhouse and birdfeeder building at Wakelee Fieldhouse from 10am – 2pm. Birdhouse and birdfeeder kits are $25. Participating children must be accompanied by an adult. Please bring your own hammer.

Saturday, April 30th: Beginning birdwatching from 8 – 9am.  Bring a camera and/or binoculars.  The Spring bird migration will be in full swing.  You could spot some of the migratory birds passing through including one of the many types of warblers.  Meet by the Imaginative Playground by Wakelee Field.

Saturday, May 14th: Canoe Day at the Demarest duck pond from noon to 3pm.  Enjoy and appreciate the sights and sounds of nature from one of our important local waterways.  The duck pond is part of the Tenakill brook. This leads to the Oradell reservoir, a critical water source for our region and important habitat for local wildlife.  Due to popular demand, we will also have a birdhouse and birdfeeder building workshop.  Please bring a hammer if you want to participate.  Rain date: Saturday, May 21st.

Saturday, June 4th:  Another beginning birdwatching session from 9 – 11am.  Bring a camera and/or binoculars.  The Spring migration will be coming to an end, however there are still opportunities to see some of the many migratory birds including hummingbirds and egrets.  Meet at the Imaginative Playground by Wakelee Field.

Saturday, Oct. 8th: Craft Show at Oktoberfest. Handmade crafts for sale – food, fun and beer; homemade goodies, arts and crafts activities for kids; nature presentations too! Also included are our popular nature themed Canoe Rides and Birdhouse/Birdfeeder Building workshop. 10am to 5pm. Rain date: Saturday, October 15th.
